How to Care for Linen Clothing

Linen is one of the most rewarding fabrics to own. It breathes better than cotton, softens with every wash, and ages beautifully — but only if you treat it right. Here's a straightforward guide to keeping your linen in its best shape, season after season.

Washing Linen

Machine wash on a gentle or delicate cycle using cold or lukewarm water (30°C max). Use a mild, pH-neutral detergent — avoid anything with bleach or optical brighteners, which weaken linen fibres over time. Turn garments inside out to protect the outer surface.

For light everyday wear, hand washing is even gentler. Submerge the garment, swirl gently, and rinse thoroughly. Never wring or twist linen — it stresses the weave.

Drying Linen

Air drying is always the best option. Lay flat or hang on a wide hanger away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading and brittleness. Linen dries quickly, so this rarely takes long.

If you use a dryer, keep it on a low heat setting and remove the garment while it's still slightly damp. Over-drying makes linen stiff and prone to creasing.

Ironing and Steaming

Linen wrinkles — that's part of its character. If you prefer a crisper look, iron while the fabric is still slightly damp on a medium-to-high heat setting. Steam works beautifully too, and is gentler on the fibres.

Many people embrace the relaxed, lived-in texture of linen without ironing at all. Both approaches are valid.

Storing Linen

Store linen garments folded or hung in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space. Avoid plastic bags or airtight containers — linen is a natural fibre that needs to breathe. Cedar blocks or lavender sachets are a good natural alternative to mothballs.

What to Avoid

  • Hot water washes — they cause shrinkage
  • Tumble drying on high heat
  • Harsh detergents or fabric softeners (they coat the fibres and reduce breathability)
  • Leaving linen damp for extended periods
